Dambulla Auras were facing Colombo Strikers in the 8th match of the Lanka Premier League 2023 at Pallekele. The game was heading towards a highly climatic end. Colombo Strikers needed 31 runs off the last over to win the game. Chamika Karunaratne was on strike with Nuwanidu Fernando at the other end. After having initially hit a six off the first ball, Karunaratne put the pressure on the Dambulla Auras. However the next ball was of Yorker length and Karunaratne couldn’t do much but drill it down the ground for a single. It was while he was running between the wickets that resulted in some verbal argument between the batter and Dambulla’s wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis. Karunaratne wanted a second run but was sent back and while he was trying to get back into his crease at the non striker’s end, the throw almost hit him. However Karunaratne managed to get out of the way and in trying to do so unintentionally raised both his arms in the air to avoid getting hit by the ball. This was followed by some heated exchange between him and Kusal Mendis, since the latter wasn’t happy regarding the former’s potentially obstructing the wicket. The verbal exchanges did continue for sometime with both the players pointing fingers towards each other until they were separated finally.

Dambulla eventually went on to win the match by 10 runs. Kusal Mendis who had smashed a brilliant 87 off just 46 balls was adjudged as the man of the match.
