Nottinghamshire took on Essex in the recent match of the Metro Bank One Day Cup at the County ground in Chelmsford. Nottinghamshire were put in to bat first by Essex after having lost the toss. Ben Slater along with Benjamin Martindale came out to open the innings for Nottinghamshire. It was in the second over the innings that an incident took place which took everyone by surprise.  Benjamin Martindale was on strike all set to face the fifth ball of Potter’s second over. He played a controlled shot trying to tap the ball towards the short cover region and immediately set off in an attempt to take a quick single.

Martindale however was sent back almost instantly by Ben Slater at the non striker’s end. It was right then that Martindale lost his foot and slipped midway between the pitch while trying to turn back and reach his crease at the striker’s end. The batsman however managed to get up after a second’s delay but was still well short of his crease. The throw from the 30 yard circle too had come in by then. Martindale put in a desperate dive in an attempt to cross the crease on time with the fielder’s throw having hit the stumps. The call was too close one for the on field umpires to take as Martindale seemed a goner initially. However replays later showed that the batter’s full strength dive had saved him his wicket by a fine margin.

The opening batters went on to put on a century stand. However the innings didn’t really get going due to major failures by the middle order as Nottinghamshire only managed to score 237 before being bundled out in the 46th over. Essex in response were bowled out for just 69 runs as Nottinghamshire eventually won the game by a massive margin of 168 runs.
